چکیده

This Seventeenth Growth Symposium volume is comprised of papers presented in June of 1958. As stated in the foreword, the theme of the conference was that of "Differentiation and growth in response to a changing chemical environment." As Dr. Rudnick points out, and as is all too obvious, this permits an extremely wide range of papers. Subjects and authors are: (1) Wilde-Differentiation in response to chemical environment; (2) Hoffmann-Berling-Cell structures in cell movements; (3) Nason-Tocopheral in muscle; (4)-Csapo-Myometrial regulation; (5) MoogPhosphatase adaption; (6) Schneiderman-Insect growth hormones; (7) Torrey-Modification of root development; (8) Luckwill-fruit growth in relation to chemical stimuli; (9) Loomis-CO2 and feedback mechanisms; and (10) Lutwak-Mann-Physiology of mammalian blastocyst. Treatments vary greatly, from very detailed accounts of limited subjects, as the Tocopheral paper, to more generalized talks, such as Wilde's, to excellent theoretical discussions, such as the Loomis CO2 story. Because of the wide range dealt with it is difficult to recommend this volume to any one type of biologist, or even to a developmental biologist in general, for with depth of treatment in very specific subjects comes less general applicability and interest. Nevertheless, this volume, like the preceding Growth Symposia, does present a sampling of the broad range of activity that interests modern developmental biologists.

The hormonal milieu in primary breast cancer: A correlation between steroid receptors and serum estradiol, progesterone and prolactin

Background: The female breast is subjected to a lifetime of hormonal controls, whose effect is evident at the time of menarche and during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and lactation. Studies have reported multiple risk factors for breast cancer, some of which are a reflection of hormonally mediated events. The steroid receptors are also served as prognostic factors for evaluating status of mal...

Cochlear Homeostasis and Homeostatic Disorders

The concept of homeostasis goes back to the French physiologist Claude Bernard (1813–1878), who stressed that two environments are most important in multicellular organisms, a “milieu extérieur” that surrounds the organism and a “milieu intérieur” as an extracellular fluid space in which the cells of the organism live (Bernard 1878). Bernard recognized the “fixité du milieu intérieur,” which me...

WALTHAM International Science Symposium: Nature, Nurture, and the Case for Nutrition The Stratum Corneum Barrier: The Final Frontier

The stratum corneum (SC) is the differentiated end product of the mammalian epidermis. It is vital to constancy of the milieu interieur (the environment within) because it prevents water loss and the penetration by potentially toxic xenobiotics, damaging radiation, and pathogenic microbes. The intercorneocyte space contains complex nonpolar lipids that constitute the water barrier. The formatio...

Situations Leading to Oxidative Stress in Dairy Cattle

Free radicals are normally produced by living organism, at controlled production rate they perform physiological functions as signal transduction molecules. However, situations leading to an overproduction that surpasses antioxidant capacity creates oxidative stress. Consequently, damage to the cell membrane, protein, DNA and cell death are observed. Dairy cattle are susceptible to oxidative st...

Aging Systemic Milieu Impairs Outcome after Ischemic Stroke in Rats

Compelling evidence indicates that factors in the blood can profoundly reverse aging-related impairments, as exposure of aged mice to young blood rejuvenates adult stem cell function, improves cognition, and ameliorates cardiac hypertrophy. Systemic factors from mice can also extend the life span of a partner exposed to a lethal treatment or disease. These findings suggest that the systemic mil...

Pre-induced Lac Operon Effect on Non Specific Sugars: Pre-culture Effect is Dependent on Strength of Induction, Exponential Phase and Substrate Concentration

The source and history of the cell plays an important role in influencing the phenotypic properties of the organism in a particular environmental condition. Pre-induced lac operon provides benefit on lactose environment. During metabolism lactose is broken down into glucose and galactose. The fate of cells with pre-induced lac operon on glucose and galactose milieu is not known. The influence o...
